What’s a mom to wear?

What is it with me? I seem to get up in the morning, and in the middle of getting dressed I get distracted and start doing something different. Happen to anyone else? It’s not like I don’t have decent clothes. I do. I promise. I just never find my way in to them. I chuckle every time I see the LBD’s in my closet. Seriously, dude. When am I EVER going to wear those? I suppose I could wear them to Stop n Shop. It IS Martha’s Vineyard, after all. Oh wait, I forget. People here do not dress up for anything. I mean…ANYTHING. Jeans are appropriate for every situation on the Vineyard, and many times, jeans are overkill. Just wear your fave cutoffs and dingy t-shirts. They will do just fine. The only people who dress up here are the ones that don’t actually live here. I know because I did this when I used to vacation here, too. I would buy that pretty striped nautical shirt, and long for a new pair of Sperry boat shoes to show off during my week’s stay. Walk around Edgartown any given summer evening and observe the dudes wearing pink polo shirts and white linen pants…it’s quite amusing. I promise they do not live here.

Anyway, back to my ensemble of the week. Let’s see…today I got a little further than usual. I put on a long-sleeved t-shirt and since we keep the heat low, through a sweater over it. I had every intention of putting my jeans on (my choices are skinny jeans from Old Navy and hand-me-down mom jeans from my mom) but it never happened.

JC Penney sweater day # 5

So, pair that with my red flannel pajama pants, fuzzy socks that were a Christmas present from mom and the slippers I bought the hubby for Christmas….we have quite a showpiece going on here.

rockin hubby's new loafers ~ yes they are too big I wear them anyway

don't be jealous

And of course we didn’t even get to hair and make-up yet. Hair never made it out of the bun and make-up…forget it.

I should just grab that bun and get the scissors already

It’s not that I don’t want to look good. I just get comfy. I don’t go anywhere. I have been to the post office one time in five days. There are no real stores here, and absolutely nothing to do in the winter. Anything I have to do at home I can do in my flannel jammies. Who I really feel sorry for in all this is my husband. He is the one who has to see me in this crap. With all the positive changes I am making in the new year I think I will add one more. Getting dressed. That’s not unreasonable, right? Maybe tomorrow I will give it a whirl. Maybe.

Friday the 13th

I just realized that today is the 13th. And it’s Friday. That could explain why my son had the urge to create a Picasso using  nature’s paint fresh from his diaper. Thanks Jack!! During what was supposed to be nap time, he decided it would be a great idea to smear his turds not only on one wall, but all the walls, his bed, dresser, mirror and floors. Ugh!!

Jack's Masterpiece

I had the pleasure of Googling how to clean up this monster mess and found many other parents have the same issue. It’s nice to know my son isn’t the only budding artist out there. I knew I needed a plan. This is where my nursing experience took over…assess, plan, implement, evaluate. After assessing the situation and figuring moving to a new house wasn’t realistic, I knew I needed a plan. I boiled some water on the stove, got some clean rags (we don’t use paper towels) and went to work.

In case any other poor soul ever has the misfortune of cleaning dried poop off walls (painted with flat paint) and wood floors…let me help you out. It’s overwhelming, but you CAN successfully clean it. I promise. Mind over matter.

Step 1: Boil water on the stove

ready to work!!

Step 2: While water is boiling, gather clean rags or towels and try not to break down in tears over the work that lay ahead.

Step 3: Pick up any “chunkage” with coffee filters…since I don’t use paper towels they were the next best thing. You need to pick up all chunks before you begin cleaning dried poop stuck on walls and floors.

Step 4: Bring water (pan and all) in to room, dip rags in hot water (be extremely careful, obviously) and drip water over poop. Yes it runs down  walls and makes a mess, but it does the job.

Step 5: scrub, refrain from letting swear words in your head come out of your mouth (by far the most difficult step of this process).

Step 6: repeat steps 4 and 5 as necessary, while basking in the aroma of hot water and melting poop. Being a nurse for some years now, I am used to this smell, but for those of you smart enough to follow another career path…enjoy.

after scrubbing with hot water

Step 7: there may still be some really tough little turd pieces stuck to walls, even after all that scrubbing with hot water (I had to repeat that process two and three times, depending on the wall). I used popsicle sticks to scrape the remaining poops off the walls…they worked really well. If you don’t have popsicle sticks, anything will do…spoon, butter knife, fingernail (if you’re really brave).

Step 8: spray with disinfectant. The boiling water will remove the poop but I can’t imagine it will kill the germs so I used a mix a bleach and water in a spray bottle and sprayed down every square inch of that room.

Step 9: air room out as best you can. Open windows, get a fan, plug-in air fresheners…whatever you have to do. It will probably smell bad for a while.

What a process!! The entire thing took about 45 minutes, not nearly as long as I had anticipated. I read in another mom’s blog how to remove poop from carpet…very informative and simple. The only ingredient required is hydrogen peroxide…apparently it gets rid of the poop and smell without leaving a stain. Read her most helpful post here: http://armywifetoddlermom.blogspot.com/2005/09/how-to-clean-poop-off-of-carpet-in-3_16.html

If her trick works on carpet, I would be willing to bet it’s a great stain remover..I’m going to give this a whirl next time I need one.

I wish you all a wonderful Friday the 13th and hope it’s slightly less eventful than mine.

I would love to hear about any cleaning tips or tricks you all use!

New Year Inspiration

So did anyone catch the interview with Oprah and Joel Osteen last night on the O Network? I was lucky enough to see it from start to finish and found it to be very inspirational. For anyone who’s never seen him preach on TV…it’s simply amazing. He is SO good. Televangelists do not have the best reputations, but, if you give him a chance, you will clearly see why he has become “America’s Preacher”. Even if you aren’t religious, even if you aren’t sure about God, or whatever your feelings are toward all that, I would be certain you will find his message uplifting and practical to every day life. It will feel like he’s talking to you. Because he is.

I found the interview to be very inspiring and watching it made me reflect upon my own life. Am I doing all God meant for me to do? Am I fulfilling my purpose? What the heck is my purpose? Am I really supposed to provide people with organic soap (that’s my small business)? Because when I look at it that way, it doesn’t seem all that great, lol. Am I supposed to continue my nursing career? Or leave it behind? What is God’s intention for me? If we are all an individual masterpiece, why don’t I feel like a great work? There are many times I don’t feel prized or worth anything. Do others feel that way, too? Do we need to redefine “masterpiece”?  I thought of my children asleep and of my husband in a motel room a couple hours away working for the Air Force. Am I serving not only God, but them, to the best of my abilities? If I am to be completely honest, I would have to say no. Why not? I have no idea. I just know I can do better, and like Oprah said Maya Angelou says, “when you know better, you do better”. Today, I am going to begin doing better.

Yesterday, I wrote about Pinterest and what basically what a time suck I thought it was. But after the show last night, I began looking at it in a different light. We are all in need of a little beauty in our lives. It’s a great way to share discoveries and things you love with others. Who doesn’t appreciate a little beauty in their lives? People are capable of so many fantastic things, and Pinterest is a really great way to share ideas and talent from multiple sources. Once you start putting the “boards” together, you can really learn a lot about yourself and see patterns in the things you love. I didn’t fully realize how much I enjoy white until this morning. I also love the country life, farms, and simple living. Here are a few pics of some items I found to be practical yet still beautiful in their simplicity. I hope you enjoy them. For more visual inspiration, visit my Pinterest boards at http://pinterest.com/tatersntomaters/pins/. I hope it brings a little beauty and joy to your life.

With all this being said, I am taking my blog in a new direction. I was really unsure of why I started all of this, but, now I know. I want to share love, laughter, inspiration and stories with all of you. It really is the simple things in life that make it so wonderful. I hope you enjoy. Blessings to you on this lovely Monday! It is Monday, right?

What’s your Pinterest?

Figuring out exactly what to write is much more difficult than I had anticipated. I have written and deleted quite a few sentences by now…anyone else have that problem?

Today was a great day. Temps here on Martha’s Vineyard were in the high 50’s which made for a great day in getting things down outside. All the Christmas stuff is down outdoors…now if we can just get rid of this tree inside. It has white lights and red ornaments so it’s not all that out-of-place for Valentine’s Day, which, could be a great thing if I don’t get around to it. Our two little ones have birthdays this month, so we could give incorporating it into birthday party decor a whirl. Does anyone else have the urge to just throw the whole tree out…including lights and ornaments? Or is that just me? Surely not picking up dead needles for the next six months is worth the cost of lights and a few new ornaments.

I, like most people this time of year I would assume, have a huge itch to just CLEAN OUT. We rent a furnished house, and don’t have a lot of space for personal belongings to begin with, but nonetheless, I just want this shit gone. One problem I come across is the Dumptique. Here on the Vineyard we have to take our trash to the dump (at least most of us do) and there is this little hut with all kinds of free crap people can leave there if it’s too good to throw out. So every time we throw stuff away, we can get more completely unnecessary free stuff, and so the circle continues. Today, I got all the December magazines I was too cheap to buy at the grocery store for free! So after I finish I can return them for someone else.

My goal for the next couple of days is to get my kitchen in order along with the rest of the house. My BFF gave us an awesome camera for Christmas so I can’t wait to put that to good use. Along with my house, I obviously need to get better organized with this blog. There is so much I want to write about, and so many ideas I have, but when I sit down to write, I just draw a blank.

And, unfortunately (or luckily) I received my Pinterest invite so now I am totally obsessed with that. I got it today and jumped for joy. I applied for it a couple of weeks back and was fairly annoyed that I didn’t get it right away, but I suppose it builds anticipation? No, actually it just annoyed the hell out of me. But, anyway, I can’t tear myself away. I have it organized a little like I want the blog organized…food, country home and decor, kids stuff, travel, awesome vintage stuff, farm life, funny redneck stuff. A plethora of me, if you will.  Anyone who hasn’t checked it out definitely should. It’s a lot of fun, and if you want an invite, I can send you one, so you don’t have to wait around forever like I did.

Some turd at Pinterest decided to limit the user name to 15 characters, so it’s not exactly the same as my blog, but close. Check ‘r out…

Down the Chumding…

So actually, this post is copy and pasted from my first blog on blogspot.com. I could NOT figure that site out. I consider myself fairly internet savvy and I just did not have the patience for it…anyhow…moved over to WordPress and it appears much more user friendly….

So today is New Year’s Day. I once read somewhere what a person does on New Year’s Day sets the tone for the whole year so, let’s see: yelled at kids…check. Swore a bunch… check. Left some chores undone that I really need to be doing at this moment…check. Hmmm….

There are, however, several very important things I did today to get myself off to a great start in 2012. I have wanted to begin a blog for a very long time. Finallly!!! Today is the day!!! I made some personal goals and brainstormed about all the things I want to achieve this year and in the future.  And, maybe most importantly, we figured out what the heck our 2 year old son means when he says “down the chumding”. I believe it to be his interpretation of “down the chimney”. I think it would be even funnier if he meant shitter, so I’m going to pretend that’s what it means.

Hopefully my start to 2012 isn’t down the chumding.

Here are some of my resolutions in no particular order:

Make a trip to Missouri ~ road trip!!!

Get my mom’s recipes down on paper

  Get my small business organized

 Implement my business plans T

ake charge of my education

Swear less (notice I didn’t say stop swearing…just do it less)

 Use coupons
